The construction of the Itaipu dam on the Parana river between Brazil and Paraguay started in 1975 and is still the biggest operating hydroelectric dam in the world. It is specially spectacular in the rainy season when the overflow of water let out creates an impressive waterfall. In 1995 the dam was elected one of the seven wonders by the world the American Society of Civil Engineers. In total 20 turbines generate 14GW of power.
